Great feedback from Clare Burgess tour 6 Sept 2022 tour of Green Point Urban Park, so we’ll be doing another in 2023. Clare is a landscape architect, Treekeepers co-founder and chair, artist and retired university lecturer. (Clare leads our popular Company’s Garden and Arderne tree tours.)

Green Point Park is perhaps one of South Africa’s best free parks. It is a legacy project from the 2010 Soccer World Cup. The magnificent shape of the stadium can be seen on one side, and stunning views of Signal Hill and Lion’s Head on the other.

Our focus is understanding the landscape design process and how it has developed as an educational garden. Much of the tour will be in the biodiversity garden. It includes the careful placing of art made in a variety of materials, including metal, beads, ceramics and mosaics. Khoi displays remind us of the First People who were here pre 17th century.

The ponds and waterways in the park, fed by Table Mountain streams, attract ducks, sea birds and even otters. Bird guide, Linda Hibbin, will be joining us (bring your binoculars!).

Let me know if you have any old pictures and stories of this public space pre 2010. It has a surprising history; it was a Boer prisoners-of-war camp for the South African War.

There is nothing common about Green Point common!
