Salt River art history tour
August 8 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
R400

This guided walking tour explores Salt River, one of Cape Town’s most visually expressive neighbourhoods. Once a thriving industrial hub, the area has transformed into an open-air gallery where large-scale murals, graffiti and public art cover warehouse walls and side streets. Along the way, the tour examines the artists behind the works, the political and social commentary embedded in the murals, and the neighbourhood’s industrial heritage alongside the ongoing urban change that some local residents view as a significant challenge.
The walk also considers the role of faith communities—including mosques, churches and small Christian ministries—in shaping the streetscape and community life. A highlight is a visit to Community House, where the history of social activism, particularly during Apartheid, is reflected across its walls. A dedicated tour of Community House will be organised in the near future.

“I really enjoyed the relaxed nature of the tour, even the easy way we were able to meet and connect with new people. Kate has a knack for making people feel at ease, and anticipating their needs- even letting us know where there would be toilet facilities. Her knowledge astounds me, and I learned so much more than I expected! I’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for another tour to join.” Jenny, architect
“The DHL international group absolutely loved the experience and were truly inspired by your knowledge, passion, and the way you bring everything to life… it was a very special day.” Caroline, project manager
