Welgemeend art, campus and lunch

August 23, 2024 @ 11:00 am - 1:30 pm

R650

An old Cape Dutch beautifully kept homestead has exceptional South African modern and contemporary art carefully hung around the home just during August.

The annual fundraising exhibition this year is (On)bekend / (Un)knownUnusual, or rarely seen artworks, by well known artists, are displayed with works by artists most of us have never heard of, but probably should have! They mostly belong to Lizelle and Frank Kilbourn who are long term supporters of this exceptional building, Welgemeend, one of the few remaining Table Valley farmsteads.

It is central – just off Kloof Street, in the grounds of the Jan van Riebeeck Hoërskool. Founded in 1926, built in 1931 and designed by John Lyon, it has a “moderne” take on Cape Dutch – brick, shutters, gables and courtyards.

We meet at Welgemeend at 11am, then will be shown briefly around the impressive main buildings of the school. (I went for the first time during the Japan Festival last year, and was so impressed).

At 11h30 an art specialist from Strauss & Co will show us round the exhibition the carefully curated with the Kilbourns at Welgemeend.

We finish with a light lunch eg home-made soup, cheese, wine and coffee, ending 13h30. (Vegetarians and wheat free eaters catered for.)

R450 payment pre 21 August, then R650 per person.
