Waterfront Family Walkabout
January 9, 2025 @ 9:15 am - 10:30 am
R150 – R300NEW – bring the kids and have fun learning about the V&A Waterfront and history. The tour is led by experienced tourist guide Jeanne Bonnema, with Emma Cleworth. They co-authored the new book, published by Penguin Random House, Kids’ Cape Town Guidebook & Activities
Ideal for children between six and ten years.
As we go, we do ‘eye spy’.
We start at the seal platform by the Aquarium (a map will be sent in advance). Why do they have these easily accessible resting spots? There are lots of interesting facts about these semi-aquatic mammals.
At Nobel Square (pictured), we hear about South Africa’s Nobel Peace Prize winners, and do a game in the book. We point out and explain the impressive dry dock and curious time ball tower nearby.
At the newish swing bridge, we learn its story and do an activity in the book.
Across the bridge, we stop at artist and photographer Erhardt Thiel’s iMadiba. It is an artistic recreation of Nelson Mandela’s Robben Island cell. We learn interesting facts about Mandela and Robben Island (which has a chapter in the book).
Next stop is the giant penguin sculpture, Water Wars by William Sweetlove. It is made of 40% recycled materials, including single use plastic bags.
Our last stop is a different but important one: the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI). By the shop and rescue boat, one of their team talks briefly about their work.
Keenies can stay on to make the spinner in the book. Others might like to buy an ice cream!
