Waterfront Family Walkabout

September 18 @ 9:30 am - 11:00 am

R150 – R300

NEW – bring the kids and have fun learning about the V&A Waterfront and history. The tour is led by experienced tourist guide Jeanne Bonnema, with Emma Cleworth. They co-authored the new book, published by Penguin Random House, Kids’ Cape Town Guidebook & Activities

Ideal for children between six and ten years.

We start at the seal platform by the Aquarium (a map will be sent in advance).  Why do they have these easily accessible resting spots? There are lots of interesting facts about these semi-aquatic mammals.

At Nobel Square (pictured), we hear about South Africa’s Nobel Peace Prize winners, and do a game in the book. We point out and explain the impressive dry dock and curious time ball tower nearby.

At the newish swing bridge, we learn about it and do an activity in the book.

Across the bridge, we stop at iMadiba by artist and photographer Erhardt Thiel. It is an artistic recreation of Nelson Mandela’s prison cell on Robben Island close by. Here Jeanne talks briefly about Mandela and Robben Island (which has a chapter in the book).

Next stop is the giant penguin sculpture, Water Wars by William Sweetlove. It is made of 40% recycled materials, including single use plastic bags.

Our last ‘port of call’ is the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI). One of their team gives a short summary of their work.

You can slip away or stay to make a spinner.
