Camellias – Vergelegen’s gardens and history

With over 1 000 camellias, Vergelegen is an International Camellia Garden of Excellence; it is the only one in Africa. Alistair, our guide who lives close by, helped propagate some of them. Camellias flower in Cape Town’s winter and will be the culmination of this highly enjoyable tour.
A full time tourist guide, Alistair is a consummate story teller; he also loves plants and propagating. He has fascinating stories about the history of this old estate, founded in 1700. These range from the supposed hidden ship wreck treasure, British royal family visits and Mandela’s VIP Anglo American dinner.
This will be the fourth year Alistair has led Culture Connects in Vergelegen Wine Farm’s beautifully kept and extensive gardens with many different style ”rooms”. It is one of our most popular tours.
Cost: R350 for early birds | R450 standard fee
When you arrive at Vergelegen at the security boom you’ll be asked to pay the entry fee R20 (R10 for pensioners and students); please don’t include this in the payment to me in advance.
