Taste the Mother City with Unexplored Cape Town
This exciting food walk explores central Cape Town’s informal and formal economies. From traditional African to artisan-driven culinary destinations, the variety is deliciously wide. The cafes and stalls we visit are started and run by people dedicated to producing the best possible.
Our aim is to establish, in an enjoyable way, a genuine connection between food, culture, economy and history.
The tour is curated and led by Unexplored Cape Town, a collective specialising in food journeys through the heart and soul of Cape Town’s local communities and African diaspora. Founded by Dennis Molewa, Unexplored Cape Town also mentors emerging entrepreneurs in the food and hospitality industries, such as Kwela Brews in Langa.
Originally from Germany, Dennis has lived in South Africa for 16 years.

Dennis himself occasionally leads the tour; otherwise, it’s led by his team members, Aviwe Macothoza and Fezekisa Wulana. The tour includes Somali, Jewish, Lebanese, Zimbabwean and Xhosa food – we stop outside some places, go into others. We’ll meet founders and key staff, all of whom are passionate about what they do.
As part of the walk, the history and design of Cape Town are explored in the context of its link with food. Guides point out favourite fine-dining and fun restaurants, some highly ranked internationally, others new and keen.
The tour in a nutshell is about people, spaces and food of the inner city. It is inclusive, considering everyone, but in particular, the perspective of small food vendors.
Come hungry (and with a shopping bag).
No pork or alcohol. If you are wheat-free, vegetarian or vegan, you’ll be fine – just let me know when booking, ditto food allergies.

Cost: R600. This includes food and drink. Children under eight years old, no charge.

You can book your own private tour (great for treating visitors, families or colleagues). It can be adapted to include more art, architecture and history – a superb way to experience and learn about Cape Town, both for visitors and residents.
