Street art Salt River gin

February 12 @ 5:15 pm - 7:15 pm
R450

A big hit – street art tour starting at Hope Distillery with one of their delicious botanical gin and tonics. It is in the heart of Cape Town’s best place for street art, Salt River.

Salt River has the best street art in the Mother City. Style, size and subject range enormously. Baz-Art’s International Public Art Festival was held in Salt River 2017 – 2021. Salt River Heritage Society commission murals, mainly about Palestine and former residents who have been significant to South Africa’s culture, sports and, in particular, social justice. Community House’s art inside and out, is about anti-Apartheid activism and workers’ rights.

The area is changing all the time, especially with new property development. It was one of Cape Town’s first industrialised areas, with factories, railway lines and workers’ housing from the mid 1800s. Many families have lived here for generations and feel the sense of community is been eroded.

17h15 start:

Hope Distillery, 7 Hopkins Street

Salt River, Cape Town, 7925

Street parking is easy to find (as ever, don’t leave valuables in sight). We finish close by at 19h15.

A map, parking, images, what to wear/bring, supper suggestions and a short history of street art will be sent beforehand.

R450 per person; R320 early bird paying before 2 February 2026 ie ten days in advance

I repeat this tour regularly, sometime on weekdays, other times Saturday mornings. Given the heat of summer days, this evening one is a winner.

Let me know if you would like your own tour, or, suggest a date for future public, scheduled ones.

Street art is nothing else but urban poetry that catches someone’s eye. C215 (French)

Street art is such a pure art form. Maybe not quite as pure as graffiti but up there. It is so democratic. Art by anyone for everyone. It offers so much but asks for so little. My Dog Sighs (British)

A wall is a very big weapon. It’s one of the nastiest things you can hit someone with Banksy (British)
