Salt River Street Art & History
January 14, 2025 @ 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm
R400A winner – huge and varied street art, starting at Hope Distillery with one of their delicious gin and tonics, on the house.
Salt River has the best street art in the Mother City. Style, size and subject range enormously.
The area is full of South African history – ranging from a Portugese mini battle in 1510 to anti-Aparthied protests and now anti-gentification.
With Woodstock next door, it was one of Cape Town’s first industrialised areas, with factories, railway lines and workers’ housing from the mid 1800s. Many families have lived here for generations but feel the sense of community is been eroded.
It is changing all the time, especially with massive property development.
In 2017 Cape Town’s first annual International Public Art Festival was held in Salt River. The last time it was hosted here was in 2021. The Salt River Heritage Society have started their own series of murals, mainly about Palestine and freedom fighters during Apartheid.
