Muizenberg village – waiting list
March 8 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
R400
This new tour is in a small pocket of Muizenberg, often overlooked by visitors. It is the village part – Melrose, Killarney, Atlantic, Palmer, Holland, Hansen Roads.
Palmer Road was the centre. There were very good shops for buying groceries, having shoes repaired, furniture upholstered, and even a milliner for the latest fashion in hats.
The village has connections to the whaling industry, the delivery of airmail to South Africa, the suffragette movement, boeremusiek and other surprises.
Brett McDougall is leading the tour. He lives in Muizenberg and is passionate about its architectural heritage. He is a director of Muizenberg Heritage, officially called the Muizenberg Historical Conservation Society.
In 2022 Brett published with architect Shaun Gaylard, RSA365 – Drawings of South African Architecture. Brett researched and wrote most of the text accompanying Shaun’s 365 drawings. He will bring it to the tour to sell at a special price (R850) and personalise.
Brett was presented with the Johannesburg Heritage Lifetime Honorary Membership Award. He lived in Johannesburg before moving here in 2021.
Muizenberg village’s architectural fabric, from buildings erected mainly 1900 – 1940, is remarkably intact. It was relatively neglected for almost half a century when Muizenberg started becoming unfashionable.
Enjoy Muizenberg in a new and different way, exploring its architecture and personalities.
Allow enough time for parking (it is busy on Saturdays) and we meet at 09h45 at the Surfers Walk of Fame circle on Beach Road, just outside Hans and Lloyd Coffee Co:
13 York Road
Muizenberg, Cape Town, 7950
We do, however, recommend coming by train, as the station is near the starting point (I plan to).
The event, starting at 10h00, finishes at noon. After introductions, the walk takes 90 minutes approx, with questions throughout and afterwards.
Wear good shoes, a hat and sunscreen.
Cost: R400 per person (or R300 paying before March) including an illustrated info pack
To book: kate@cultureconnectsa.com +27 (0)72 377 8014
Do join Brett and me for a light lunch afterwards or quick drink. It is a great way to continue the discussions and chat about the tour. We’ll be going to Joon:
