Artist Dylan Lewis’ tour of his garden

Dylan Lewis gives one of the most profound, yet accessible and enjoyable, art tours I have ever been on. It adds a whole new dimension to the beautiful garden he created.

The garden is close to Stellenbosch but feels remote, and has uninterrupted views to the mountains and countryside (and on a clear day way in the distance, the sea).

The style of the garden varies. Close to his studio and small gallery, the garden is manicured, reminiscent of Japanese garden design. The further away, the more wild it becomes – like many of the sculptures which Dylan carefully placed in the landscape: some dominating views, others easy to miss.

Dylan has been doing tours for Culture Connect since the garden opened about 10 years ago. His tour never disappoints whatever your taste in art or love of gardens.

Cost: R680 pay pre April, then R880 per person. This includes admission fee, a coffee/tea/soft drink and background info with background information, map (it is hard to find), guest list and recommendations for restaurants nearby for lunch (no picnics are allowed at the Garden).

If there are showers, the Garden has umbrellas and gumboots to borrow. Wet weather adds to the resonance of Dylan’s narrative and creates atmosphere in the garden. (In the unlikely event of very heavy rain and storms forecast, the tour will be postponed with a full refund or credit for another tour.)
