Curator tour Leeuwenhof SOLD OUT

Olga Speakes, the newly appointed director of the Association of Visual Arts, will lead our tour of the exhibition she curated, Between Shadows.
It is the very last chance to see this – it closes to the public after our tour.
The exhibition is in the old slave quarters of the Premier of the Western Cape’s grand, official residence, Leeuwenhof in City Bowl. It aims to make us think about the legacies of slavery in spaces that extend beyond Leeuwenhof – not just locally – such as the tough Cape Flats and empty Salt River clothing factories, but also the dilapidated old slave trading post in Guinea and Namibia’s first concentration camp.
Exhibition artists include Ashley Walters, Boyce Magandela, Graeme Williams, Haroon Gunn-Salie, Igshaan Adams, Rory Emmett, Ruth Motau, Sitaara Stodel and Zyma Amien. (Igshaan Adams, recently had a residency at Zeitz MOCAA and exhibits internationally.)
‘By interrogating official histories, by claiming their right to memory and to remembering, by imagining and telling their own stories and the stories of those, who are marginalised, the artists in this series have invited us to acknowledge the shadows of the past, to walk between them and to honour those who walked here before us,‘ to quote Olga.
This is the last of the five contemporary art exhibitions curated here by the Association for Visual Arts. In the same space there is a display of the research undertaken and showcased by the Cape Town Museum on the history of slavery, particularly people enslaved at Leeuwenhof Estate. (It is a project of the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport.)
Cost per person: R350 which includes a donation to the AVA, a not-for-profit. Two free places for the long term unemployed or full time fine art students.
Deadline for bookings Thursday (30 November) 15h30 as I need to submit ID numbers (or passport) numbers for security clearance.
