City History, Art, Architecture and Stories

August 30 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

R400

Cape Town landmarks are mixed with hidden gems in this walking tour, led by myself, Kate Crane Briggs. History comes alive.

We visit briefly the flower sellers on Trafalgar Place, old General Post Office, Adderley Street, Greenmarket Square and Long Street. I point out Grand Parade, City Hall, Company’s Garden, Parliament, Groote Kerk and the Anglican Cathedral.

Popular are my favourites, ‘Kate’s top spots’ – easy to miss features from the past and small, art spaces in old warehouses.

Colonial to contemporary, architectural styles are wide ranging and often side-by-side. African, British, Dutch, American and even French. Art Deco is a hit, especially Mutual Heights and Mullers.

Art is around every corner – some free standing, others on buildings. New murals by international street artists to 19th century statues and figurative architectural details.

Wherever possible I introduce people we meet.

We start at 10am in the foyer of the Desmond & Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation’s exhibition space, on Longmarket Street, District 6. It was recently called the Old Granary. (The neo-classical impressive facade is on 11 Buitenkant Street). A map will be sent beforehand, along with a short visual history of South Africa.

We finish at noon by Cape Town’s first purpose built theatre, 1799, now St Stephen’s Church which is by Heritage Square on Bree Street.

This tour is a hit with both locals wanting to know more about Cape Town and visitors. Often there is a mix in the group, making it all the richer.

R300 early payment 10 days in advance; then R400 per head. Pre-payment essential. Free places (or reduced priced) if you can prove paying is very hard for you or wish to volunteer eg taking pictures and posting.

Afterwards do join me for a drink or lunch at Zanne’s Fare underneath the oldest known vine in the area (1771). It is a beautiful setting and the classic South African dishes, like bobotie, are hard to beat (even the vegan one).
