City walk – history, art and architecture

March 27 @ 10:00 am - 12:30 pm

R400

Classic must-sees are mixed with hidden gems. Repurposed historic buildings, architectural landmarks, hidden away art spaces, new developments…we’ll see the good, bad, ugly and beautiful.

I point out places of significance and interest – Castle of Good Hope, District 6, Old Granary (now the Tutu Foundation), Anglican and Catholic Cathedrals, Groote Kerk and slave history monuments in Church Square.

We visit briefly the flower market, old Main Post Office, House Union Block, Greenmarket Square and Company’s Garden.

Colonial to contemporary, styles are wide ranging, often side by side – African, British, Dutch, American and even French.

Art is around every corner – some free standing, others on buildings – from new large murals to carvings created a century or so ago. It is easy in a bustling city not to look up and enjoy such detail.

We start at the main entrance to the Castle of Good Hope; a map will be sent beforehand, along with a short visual history.

We finish at the Zanne’s Fare underneath the oldest known vine in the area (1771) with an optional drink or lunch afterwards.

Come after a good brunch/breakfast as we won’t stop for refreshments. Wear comfy shoes.

R300 early payment; then R400 per head; free places if you can prove paying is very hard for you
