Cape Town’s Architecture
November 20, 2024 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
R400
From Cape Dutch gabled facades to Art Deco skyscrapers, in central Cape Town the variety of architectural styles is wide-ranging. Often different materials, sizes and styles are right next to each other.
Come and enjoy exploring, looking up and sometimes popping into buildings with me, Kate Crane Briggs. Architectural tours in Cape Town is one of my specialities but I usually just do these for privately commissioned tours for visitors.
Our route includes: City Hall, Grand Central (the former central post office), Mutual Building, Church Square, Union House with its School of Explorative Architecture, Parliament, the Presidency’s Tuinhuis and Dean Jay Architects’ new memorial to black South African WW1 troops being launched in early 2025.
Colonial to contemporary, Hollywood to Whitehall and seaport to luxury – enjoy the inspirations and aspirations that make up Cape Town’s eclectic and distinctive cityscape.
Wednesday 20 November 2024
10am to noon
Starting in the foyer of the Truth to Power exhibition off Buitenkant Street in the Desmond and Leah Tutu Foundation building which until recently was called the Old Granary. The entrance is on Longmarket Street, District 6 (arrive early if you want to go into the exhibitions about the Tutu’s and this historic building).
Finishing at: St Martini Gardens, Queen Victoria Street (the Planetarium end). This was co-designed by Pius Pahl, his largest project. Pius was one of the last architects to qualify at the Bauhaus (he moved to Stellenbosch in the 1950s).
Do join me for a quick lunch nearby afterwards.
R300 paying early and before 6 November, then R400 per person (two free places for full time architectural and design students)
