Brett Murray: Wild Life walkabout at Norval
Acclaimed artist Brett Murray leads a walkabout of Brett Murray: Wild Life at Norval Foundation, a major solo exhibition showcasing more than eighty sculptures spanning four decades of his celebrated—and at times controversial—career.
The exhibition brings together a fascinating menagerie of creatures, including primates, elephants, bulls, pigs and imagined hybrids. Through these works, Murray explores the contradictions of modern life: the comic, the tragic and the deeply human. Beneath the polished surfaces of bronze and marble lies a sharp and often satirical observation of society’s foibles.
Wild Life refers both to the animal kingdom and to the personalities that have shaped South Africa’s political landscape. While Murray’s animals often appear playful, their postures and expressions raise deeper questions about power, pride, fear, absurdity and tenderness.
The exhibition traces the artist’s evolution from the politically charged works of the 1980s to the more reflective and intimate sculptures of recent years.
Murray draws inspiration from a wide range of visual sources, including Walt Disney animations, East Asian vinyl toys, Brâncuși’s polished forms and West African Baule figures.
