Athlone with Anthony Hartman

10h00 to 12h00, dislocation, relocation and rebirth – this tour is led by Anthony Hartman, former Athlone resident and qualified, experienced tourist guide.

How history shaped Cape Town and shaped South Africa’s first democratic Constitution, hailed by some as one of the best in the world.

Stops include:

  • The home where guide Anthony was bought up (where we start)
  • Trojan Horse Memorial where three anti-apartheid protesters were killed and 15 wounded by a police ambush in 1985
  • Clergy memorial in Kromboom Park, March 1985
  • Robert Waterwitch and Colleen Williams Memorial – they were ANC activists who died in an explosion outside the Magistrates’ court, 1989

This is our first tour in Athlone, but one I’ve been meaning to do for ages – it is 15 mins drive from central Cape Town, next to Rondebosch, but feels a world away.

The sites are too far apart to walk, so please lift share, Uber or follow in your car.

Afterwards do join Anthony and me for lunch in Athlone in his friend’s house:

2 Athlone Street

Garlandale, Athlone

Athlone is the birth place of the Gatsby sandwich/roll. In the Netflix’s Somebody Feed Phil he loved his first Gatsby here. But our lunch will be healthier with wheat and meat free options.

R360 per person, or R260 payment pre 10 days; add R200 for lunch
