After much planning and hard work, this major, new exhibition When We See Us explores Black self-representation through figurative painting. It celebrates Black subjectivities and consciousness from pan-African and pan-diasporic perspectives. With over 200 works of art from the past 100 years, it the largest exhibition of its kind to be held in Africa.

From a portrait of the Obamas to unnamed sitters/subjects, the variety is huge. Artistic lineages, art schools and movements include Nigeria’s Nsukka School, Ecole de Dakar, Ghana’s Kumasi School and the British Black Arts Movement.

Beata America will be our guide; she is an assistant curator at Zeitz MOCAA and comes highly recommended. She joined the team in July 2021, previously she was a curatorial assistant at A4 Foundation and interned at Iziko. Beata’s BA and Masters is from Stellenbosch University and her Honours in Curatorship, the University of Cape Town.

When We See Us 20 Nov 2022 to 3 Sept 2023.
