Andrew Lamprecht, Curator of Historical Paintings and Sculpture at Iziko Museums of South Africa, will host and lead our tour of the new, major show he has curated: Breaking Down the Walls – 150 years of Art Collecting. It aims to place this prestigious national collection under scrutiny: how do we commemorate a collection founded on colonial collecting principles?

There are over 500 artworks – some on show for the first time. Works by South African artists such as Irma Stern, Gerard Sekoto, Peter Clarke and Gladys Mgudlandlu, are juxtaposed with historical paintings and sculptures such as Rembrandt, Picasso and Goya.

Breaking Down the Walls comprises of topical sections, as opposed to being thematic or chronological. There are different types of curatorial styles, as Andrew will explain. The exhibition has been consciously curated to include the many absences in this national collection.

Andrew is based here, Iziko South African National Gallery. It is his first exhibition since he started at Iziko in July 2021. For nearly 20 years, Andrew a lecturer at University of Cape Town’s Michaelis (the other side of Company’s Gardens).

For the exhibition Andrew and his small team at Iziko worked with a reference group that included Amohelang Mohajane, Barboro Martinez-Ruiz, Bettina Malcomess, Ciraj Rassool, Ernestine White-Mifetu and Tony Gum.

The whole gallery has been closed for five months and re-opened in October with this landmark exhibition.

Do join me for lunch nearby afterwards; venue tbc but Maria’s Dunkley Square likely.
