Dr André van Graan’s Art Deco City Walk

Art Deco expert, Dr André van Graan, leads our popular Art Deco walk spanning Cape Town’s first sky scrapers to tiny detailing in shop facades. Our short route includes St Georges Mall, Greenmarket Square, Wale and Burg Streets.

We start with a quick overview of Art Deco, hosted by Mullers which Hidden Cape Town says would be in a museum in other countries, and finish close by at the former headquarters of Old Mutual, now called Mutual Heights (14 Darling St); when it was completed in 1939 was briefly the tallest building in Africa.

André has lectured on Cape Town’s Art Deco including giving an online talk for the UCT Summer School in 2021. André collects Art Deco and wrote his PhD on how modern architecture developed in Cape Town from 1918 to 1948. He was key to the Art Deco International Congress held in Cape Town which had its gala in the Banking Hall (guests dressed in Art Deco style!). He plans to write a book on South African Art Deco in his retirement.

Do join us afterwards for a coffee and/or light lunch in a cafe afterwards (previously we have been to Ramenhead, Labotessa and Gorgeous George).
