Architecture Tour – 11 March 2023

Art Deco Walk

Date: Saturday 11 March 2023
Time: 9:30am to 11:30am
Cost: R250 per person paying pre 11 January 2023, then R350
Location: Mullers Optometrist, 104 Longmarket Street, Cape Town City Centre, Cape Town, 8001

Led by heritage architect and Art Deco expert, Dr André van Graan, our popular Art Deco walk spans landmark buildings to small shops. Cape Town is full of ”moderne” gems.

Mullers, still an optometrist with its original interior which design writer, Paul Duncan, says in Hidden Cape Town, would be in a museum in other countries. Its neighbour, the former headquarters of Old Mutual, now called Mutual Heights (14 Darling St); when it was completed in 1939 it was briefly the tallest building in Africa.

Our route includes St Georges Mall, Greenmarket Square, Wale and Burg Streets.

A focus will be on the buildings designed by William Hood Grant, a very prolific and popular architect at the time. Bo-Kaap based town planner, Tommy Brümmer will be joining us – he has set himself the task of finding all Grant’s buildings (see his Culture Connect online talk).

André has lectured on Cape Town’s Art Deco including giving an online talk for the UCT Summer School in 2021. André collects Art Deco and wrote his PhD on how modern architecture developed in Cape Town from 1918 to 1948. André was key to the Art Deco International Congress held in Cape Town which had its gala in the Banking Hall (guests dressed in Art Deco style!). He is planning to write a book on South African Art Deco in his retirement.

Do join us afterwards for a coffee and/or light lunch in a cafe (suggestions welcome).

This is likely to sell-out.
