Art tours

Kate is fantastically knowledgeable and charming. She arranged a private tour combining our interest in both contemporary art and emerging artists with the more traditional art in the National Museum. The tour also included a personalized visit to the Houses of Parliament which was fascinating – and again there are some wonderful pieces of art there. Would highly recommend Kate. She will set up the tour around your own interests and her narrative feels fresh and unrehearsed- a must do for Capetown. Louise, Nairobi

Kate put together an amazing program that allowed me to discover and meet many Cape Town artists in their studios. Kate is very knowledgeable and created an incredible curated experience in Cap Town art scene. Laetitia, New York

We spent a morning with Kate (which was not quite long enough!) at Everard Read, The South African National Gallery and Zeitz Mocaa. It was our first time in the galleries of Cape Town and it was so good to have Kate as our expert guide. No question went unanswered and we had great chats about the South African art scene, which for us made the perfect introduction. Highlights include the mixed show at Everard Read Gallery, including the works of Erin Chaplin and Nigel Mullins, paintings from the 80s and 90s by Karel Nel and the National Gallery, and William Kentridge’s major show at Mocaa. The tour was beautifully organised and Kate was great company. Sean, London

City centre walkabout – Cape Town orientation

Our 4 children and us, had a perfect 2,5 hours tour wirh Kate. She knows a lot about the history, buildings, art and is a very nice person. We can highly recommend a tour with her. Hamburg based family

We thoroughly enjoyed our walking tour of Cape Town and cannot think of a single thing we would change. Kate spent time prior to our meeting learning about our interests and activity level, and customized our tour perfectly based on our responses. We will certainly remember this as one of the highlights of our trip. Thanks Kate, and we look forward to working with you again on our next visit! Dawn, Philadelphia

Kate paints an overall picture, then responds to your questions. She does not bombard you with dry reams of facts; telling you what you are going to see, what you are seeing and what you have seen. Chatting with you, she discovers your interests and then tells you relevant information. If Kate does not know all the answers, she says so, but provides you with them later. For example, my father said he was interested in Military history and she told him about well-known Military writer Willem Steenkamp and then emailed the details of his latest book. Kate also throws in interesting nuggets about famous figures. Our tour culminated in a cultural and culinary food experience at the home of Fayruza Abrahams in the Bo-Kaap. This lively and engaging lady welcomed us into her home with a refreshing yogurt drink and entertained us with stories of her family and the importance of sharing good food. The meal was toothsome; we devoured chilli bites, samoosas, Cape Malay chicken curry, star-aniseed rice, a sambal and garlic and herb rootis. The latter were so flaky and delicious I nearly stuffed some into my handbag! Fay wants you to be able to recreate this food at home and thoughtfully gifts you a bag of spices and the recipes. If you are visiting Cape Town for the first time, or if, like me, you are resident, I really recommend Culture Connect for a thoughtful, adaptable and memorable experience. Architecture customised tour

The brief was not easy (20th century architecture in Cape Town) and our interests are quite niche (brutalism and modernist buildings). Kate did a great job at walking us through the city, improvising on the route and coming up with great information about the central business district and the architecture of the area. We thoroughly enjoyed the time we spent with her and her followup research notes where a welcome treat.

Open tours with an in-depth focus

I really enjoyed the access and depth of experience that Kate managed to organise. It was a real privilege to have access to the oldest Mosque in Cape Town, as well as eat a traditional, home-cooked meal in someone’s private home. She also managed to organise a real academic expert on the subject to lead the walk which was super as he was from the community and understood it better than anyone else that gives such tours. All-in-all a very enlightening and fascinating tour. Michael, Cape Town

Kate took us on a cultural tour of artistic landmarks in the waterfront. We had such a rich and enjoyable experience that was incredibly organised and well thought-out. We were lucky to engage with famous contemporary South African artist Claudette Schreuders, who shared her experiences and knowledge of her field of sculpture – something that truly is once in a lifetime. It was both enjoyable and inspiring… Looking forward to many more Culture Connect tours! Simona, Cape Town

This is a really special outing to a very beautiful place in Stellenbosch. Tucked away, it is a hidden gem where beauty, both natural and man-made, is literally everywhere! Kate’s tour involves being guided by the artist himself which makes for a really special experience of the sculptural work and the garden itself. Dylan’s insights give a real depth to the visit. The organization by Kate – her informative background notes prior to the visit, maps on how to get there and the opportunity to give feedback after the visit was, as always, professional and thorough. I have done many tours with Culture Connect over the years and returning to do this one makes me realize that these are golden opportunities, beautifully curated, to uncover so much about this beautiful part of the world. Brenda, Cape Town

Today I joined a tour in the Silo district organised by Kate: top notch again! Kate always organises guided tours that are just a little bit different than the mainstream offer, be it in architecture, heritage, artistic topics… Just contact her for the agenda, and you obtain access to otherwise totally hidden gems!
