Food artist Caro de Waal in situ
A first for Culture Connect – esteemed South African food artist, Caro de Waal hosts us in her studio, for her own nature inspired art, canapes and cocktails. She’ll show us her collection of rocks, vegetation, metals and other sources of inspiration.
Caro studied fine art, qualified as a chef after three years of intensive training and had her own catering company, before babies and publishing. I first came across her work when she did amazing food installations based on artwork at the New Church Museum. Subsequently see her work featured in magazines like House and Leisure. No surprises she has over 8 000 followers on Twittter and 2 000 on Instagram.
Caro’s studio is in the old Art Deco cinema, Bijou Building, quite near the Old Biscuit Mill. Culture Connect has organised tours there before when owner and designer artist, Conrad Hicks, has hosted us in his foundry. Her space has a good view of the mountain and hopefully there’ll be a wonderful sunset for us to enjoy, as we sip her cocktails and nibbles.
Afterwards we’ll head next door (well almost) to the Reverie Social Table. Chef patron, Julia Hattingh, will host us once again at her small restaurant with its exceptionally good, locally sourced, food and wine.

Cost: R600 pre Oct, then R800 per person
