Bo-Kaap Walking Tour and Cape Malay Lunch
Local resident, community activist, and qualified guide, Bilqees Baker, takes us on a Bo-Kaap walking tour to private, sacred and public spaces. We visit the South Africa’s oldest mosque, Cape Town’s leading spice shop and the kramats (shrines). Stops also include a community mural, low cost housing and Atlas Trading (the cheapest nuts, rice and spices in town). We’ll learn about the country’s first political prisoners, slave history and community issues, especially the increasing threat of large property developments and tourist coaches that only stop for photographs.
We start outside the Iziko Bo-Kaap Museum, Wale St and finish with homemade Cape Malay lunch by Mymoena Saunders in her home, off the beaten track, 10 Yusef Drive.
